A.N.S.W.E.R. Rally

Well, folks I was in Washington DC on Saturday 17 March for, as the Sun Paper called it, the dueling protests. I went over for the Gathering of Eagles, but I did venture into the anti-war rally. The peace rally crowd seemed to be a bit more angry, and surly. It was also full of some of the old 60’s slogans, “What do we want? PEACE!” “When do we want it? NOW!” there was also something I couldn’t make out about war, racism, and sexism, etc. They also chanted about jobs, schools, wages, and justice. Now, while this chanting was going on I must admit I was in the GoE area talking to some vets who had come from all over the country because there had been threats of desecration to some monuments in general, and the Vietnam Memorial in particular, and they were not going to allow this to happen, at least not if they had any say in the matter. I found the vets to be respectful of the protesters right to speak out against the war, but just wished the protesters would acknowledge who helps secure this right. I read in the paper that there were a lot of taunts thrown at the anti-war protesters, but I saw none of it, in fact just the opposite, protesters were helped in their quest to get to their rally point. Many vets directed them to the easiest, or shortest routes, all the while being very friendly towards them. By the same token the protesters didn’t taunt the vets who wandered through their rally. They just seemed to ignore them, I guess thinking they were looking for a confrontation, while I never heard any vets express this desire, there are always a few in every crowd who many want to cause trouble, so one never knows, about either crowd. I did hear of a few protesters calling the vets baby killers, I also heard of a protester taking a poke at a vet, who dodged the swing and got in one of his own, and was hustled away by his buddies before this incident could escalate but didn’t witness either of these so I can’t attest to their actual occurrence. I did see a debate between a group of vets and a pair of protesters. One of the protesters said he wanted to get both sides of the story as he was writing about the issue, and respected the vets for what they had done. The vets for their part said they would read what he had to say if they could get the article. This debate did a one point get a bit heated; however, it never got to the point of threats, or name calling. At the worst one vet told the protesters they were misguided. But all partys shook hands afterwards, and no body went away mad.

I did ask a few of those at the anti-war rally a few questions, but for some reason everyone I asked, and I approached people at random, seemed to be a moonbat, or nutroot. Some of the answers I got to queries about the President being impeached were that he started an illegal war, it is a war of aggression, was against international law, 650,000 Iraqi civilians killed, and the 3000+ Americans. Then there was the crowd that wanted the truth about 11 September, 2001. Now these were a bunch of nut jobs, I talked to two of them just to see if they any had legitimate questions about the accounts of what happened. They didn’t. Their questions, and concerns ranged from, secret societies doing it, the same societies that killed President John Kennedy, no airplane striking the Pentagon, it was a missile, there were bombs that went off at the exact some time as the planes hit the World Trade Center, WTC building number seven being taken down even though it had minimal damage, and the person who owned the WTC making money off of the attack. Other complaints were that there was no wreckage of debris of any kind, or human remains at Shanksville, PA. No sky scraper had ever fell after only a few minutes of burning, that the whole thing would have never come down like it did, the floors pan caking, as the floors below would have stopped them. Further, why did Mohamed Atta’s passport survive? Why was the engine at the Pentagon not from a 747, but when told it wasn’t a 747 the hit the Pentagon I was told I was wrong, and that people who had told me they saw a plane hit the Pentagon were wrong also. How well did I know them, and who did they work for? The most outrageous claim about 11 September, 2001 was that the Vice President was in the White House basement bunker, and as Norman Meneta told the 9-11 Commission, he was told by the VP the order stands, when the plane that hit the Pentagon was 50 miles out, when it was 30 miles out the order still stood, and at 10 was asked if he had heard anything to indicate the order didn’t stand. So, the VP allowed the plane to hit the Pentagon without using the Anti Aircraft Artillery that has ringed the Pentagon since JKF and the Cuban missile crisis.

When it came to flags the GoE was awash in American flags. They were also handing the out to anyone who wanted one, I didn’t take, one not because I didn’t want one, but I had no way to carry it and take notes from the people of whom I asked questions. In the anti-war side I saw no American flags, but was told by a couple of people I know that there were many in this area, and I will take their word for it. However, the flags I saw were Palestinian flags, Sadam era Iraqi flags, one flag with a hammer and sickle, although this was a very small flag and on a coat not being carried, and a greenish flag with a peace sign on it. Then there were the T-shirts with the mandatory picture of Che. The protesters also seemed to be very anti Israeli and pro Palestine, with posters with a picture of someone who had been shot and the caption reading shot in the back of the head by an Israeli sniper. My question, if I had bothered to ask it would have been how do you know it was a sniper and not just a stray round from the gun battle between the Israelis and the PLO, HAMAS, or Hezbolla? The A.N.S.W.E.R. crowds also seems to be infatuated with Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez. Now I didn’t ask if they thought they would be able to protest if either of them were in charge or if the protesters were in Cuba or Venezuela so I can’t say what I might have been told. For those whop might ask, Yes I do question the patriotism of many of the protesters.

The vets at the rally were almost entirely grey beards, many bikers, you could tell from their vests and the patches on them. All of the clubs these bikers belonged to had a patriotic name like the Patriot Guard, American Combat Veterans, Vietnam Vets, etc. there were more but those are the only ones I noted. I saw some active duty soldiers, one could tell as they were in fatigues with they unit emblems, name, and service, Army, Marines, etc. There were also many people wearing leather coats with their service embroidered on them. There was one touching scene I saw, a young soldier, walked by a group of grey beard vets, and as they chatted amongst themselves this young man said to them “Gentlemen, welcome home” to which one of the grey beards, tearing up, said to his buddy “Damn, I’ve waited 40 years to hear that stuff” his response was a bit more profane, but this being a family blog I will leave it to your imagination as to what he said.

I also talked to a few of families with sons or daughters in Iraq, and they said they were there because they knew their children would want them to be, and because their children would be at the GoE rally if they were not over there. They were also very proud of their children, and rightly so. These people, with the GoE, came from far and wide they were there from Florida to Alaska, and all points in between. Many rode bikes or came in caravans, groups of vets came in buses, they came from Dover, DE, or Huston, TX, just looking at the chapter cities for the veteran organizations, and the Bike clubs was like reading a list of American cities, large and small.

These are just my observations I have looked a Michele Malikns blog and she has a more extensive report on the day, I was there for about 3 hours, she was there for 6. Further she arrived earlier then I did, so she saw the media, which was gone by the time I got there. Further Human Events online states that the National Park Service estimates the GoE had 30,000 people and that A.N.S.W.E.R. had 10,000, so the Vets out numbered the antis by 3 to 1, a good showing, and probably will not get any traction in the media. I hope this gives a clear snap shot of what I saw.

Swamp Fox: as always, a tour de force. I've been reading a bit of Civil War history lately. Some of the comments and actions made these days seem very much like the comments and actions taken years and years ago. However, there are fewer visible defenders of sane policy now than then, so it's up to fellows like you to carry the torch. Thanks.

Swamp Fox-

Thank you for the debriefing. I alsolike your choice of Mencken quotes!

Thanks for the first hand account, Swamp Fox.

While I am sure there are some true pacifists that oppose all armed conflict, my impression is that the majority of the protesters at these anit-war rallies have some other agenda than simply ending the war (or "bringing the troops home," which won't necessarily end the war). These diverse groups are only united by their hatred for all things connected to the Bush administration. Your observations appear to confirm my impression.
